Frozen More Than 24 Years, Born Perfectly Healthy!
What once sounded like science fiction became reality when a 26-year-old gave birth to an embryo frozen for more than 24 years, and it happened right here in East Tennessee! In fact, she was our patient! In late 2017, Tina Gibson gave birth to baby Emma Wren, delivering the world's longest-frozen embryo to successfully come to birth. Tina and her husband Benjamin were embryo-receiving parents through the National Embryo Donation Center and had their frozen embryo transfer (FET) performed through us. Yeast Infections During Pregnancy
Are you pregnant and suffering from a yeast infection? Did you know that over the counter Monistat 7 day is actually the preferred method of treatment during pregnancy? You Want to Intentionally Injure My Endometrium?!!?
Endometrial scratching or intentional endometrial injury is an aggressive endometrial biopsy performed at a specific time in your cycle. The theory behind the procedure is that the scratches inside the womb prompt a repair reaction, which stimulates useful growth factors, which in turn gives the embryo a better chance of implanting. This is utilized in women who have had multiple failed IUI or IVF cycles in which they did not conceive. It causes moderate cramping, so we recommend taking 3-4 Advil or 2 Aleve 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to the procedure.
Does Cancer Impact Little Swimmers?
As featured in Fertility and Sterility, a study of 45 male Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) and 13 male Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) patients plus a control group of 29 healthy men was conducted to assess sperm production and aneuploidy (abnormal number of chromosomes) in HL and NHL before and after treatments. Before treatment, HL and NHL men had altered semen characteristics and higher sperm aneuploidy rates than the control group. After treatment, sperm production was significantly lowered 3 and 6 months after ABVD + radiotherapy or CHOP/MOPP-ABV. After ABVD + radiotherapy, the aneuploidy rate increased significantly only at 3 months, and values obtained 1 or 2 years later were lower than pretreatment values. In contrast, in the CHOP/MOPP-ABV treatment group, semen characteristics and aneuploidy rate did not return to normal levels until 2 years after treatment. So, what's the bottom line, semen does not return to normal until 1 year after ABVD treatment and 2 years for CHOP-MOPP. For other types of chemo- or radiation therapy, we recommend waiting the more conservative 2 year period.
Does Male Age Matter?
An article in Fertility and Sterility asks the question: Is advanced paternal age a health risk for offspring? There was not cutoff age mentioned; however, the adverse conditions most consistently associated with increased paternal age were stillbirths, musculo-skeletal syndromes (limb defects), cleft palate, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), retinoblastoma, autism, and schizophrenia. With that being said, remember that increased fetal mortality and morbidity attributed to advanced paternal age is low in absolute terms, partly because of the rarity of the particular diseases and the low proportion of children fathered by men > 45 years.
